General information about Cap Blanc-Nez

Together with its brother the Cap Gris-Nez, the Cap Blanc-Nez is one of the most popular destinations of the Flemish in northern France. Together they form a so-called "Grand Site," meaning that the French also consider it one of their top destinations. In the North of France there is only the bay of the Somme that has such recognition.

In recent years, many efforts have been made to make this area even more attractive to tourists. Mighty vantage points and beautiful landscapes. You come here mainly to see England's white chalk cliffs.

Tip 1: If you want a mapped out hike, you can get an overview on the Nord-Découverte web site.

Tip 2: For some people, it takes a while to realize that you can not only climb the top of Cap Blanc-Nez, but equally visit the beach with its chalk cliffs. See our page on the so-called "Cran d'Escalles": you stand there at the foot of the Cap Blanc-Nez giving you a particularly good view of the chalk cliffs of France. If you want to see chalk cliffs of England well, go up (at the large parking lot), if you want to see the chalk layers of the actually Cap-Blanc Nez, you have to go down.

Tip 3: So you come here primarily to see the white chalk cliffs of England. Perhaps needless to say, but still: only in clear weather can you do so, of course. So it's best to pick a sunny, clear day. Weather forecasts can be found below. If you want to visit the beach, also check the tides. Those too can be found below. The beach is not accessible at high tide anyway .

Tip 4: On sunny summer days , Cap Blanc-Nez (the site at the top) and Cran d'Escalles (the site down by the beach) can be particularly crowded. Remember, this is one of France's top attractions. Both have their own relatively large parking lots. However: on such days it is packed and one often has to park along the main road. Arriving on time can make all the difference.

Tip 5: Go see the actual beach at Sand Gate (Sangatte): it is lined with rocks and there are still authentic, though sometimes dilapidated, beach houses.
