General information about Cap Blanc-Nez

Samen met zijn broer de Cap Gris-Nez, is de Cap Blanc-Nez eén van de meest populaire bestemmingen van de Vlamingen in Noord-Frankrijk. Samen vormen ze een zogeheten “Grand Site“, dit wil zeggen dat de Fransen dit ook als een van hun topbestemmingen aanzien. In het Noorden van Frankrijk is er enkel nog de baai van de Somme, en sinds kort ook Dunes de Flandre, die zo’n erkenning hebben.

De laatste jaren heeft men veel inspanningen gedaan om dit gebied nog aantrekkelijker te maken voor de toerist. Machtige uitkijkpunten en prachtige landschappen. Je komt vooral naar hier om de witte krijtrotsen van Engeland te zien. Die zie je het best vanaf het monument bovenop de krijtrotsen. Daar ligt ook een eerste grote parking.

Wil je de witte kalkrotsen van de Cap Blanc-Nez zelf goed zien, dan moet je naar het strand. Er is een speciale toegangsweg naar dit strand. Dit toegangspunt noemt de “Cran d’Escalles” en heeft haar eigen parking. Je kunt vanaf het monument ook naar beneden wandelen naar dit toegangspunt. Weet dat om de top van de Cap Blanc-Nez goed te zien vanaf het strand het moet eb zijn, anders kun je niet genoeg het strand op om zicht te krijgen op de top.

Ga zeker een kijkje nemen naar de uitgebreide zeemeeuwkolonie op de krijtrotsen.

Tip 2: For some people, it takes a while to realize that you can not only climb the top of Cap Blanc-Nez, but equally visit the beach with its chalk cliffs. See our page on the so-called "Cran d'Escalles": you stand there at the foot of the Cap Blanc-Nez giving you a particularly good view of the chalk cliffs of France. If you want to see chalk cliffs of England well, go up (at the large parking lot), if you want to see the chalk layers of the actually Cap-Blanc Nez, you have to go down.

Tip 3: So you come here primarily to see the white chalk cliffs of England. Perhaps needless to say, but still: only in clear weather can you do so, of course. So it's best to pick a sunny, clear day. Weather forecasts can be found below. If you want to visit the beach, also check the tides. Those too can be found below. The beach is not accessible at high tide anyway .

Tip 4: On sunny summer days , Cap Blanc-Nez (the site at the top) and Cran d'Escalles (the site down by the beach) can be particularly crowded. Remember, this is one of France's top attractions. Both have their own relatively large parking lots. However: on such days it is packed and one often has to park along the main road. Arriving on time can make all the difference.

Tip 5: Ga kijken naar het eigenlijke strand van Zandgate (Sangatte): ze is omboord met rotsblokken en er staan nog authentieke, doch soms bouwvallige, strandhuisjes.

Tip 6: Weet dat de site volledig horecavrij is. Je zal er niks vinden om te eten, te drinken, enz. . Enige optie daar is om de straat over te steken en naar de horecazaak te gaan die zich bevindt op een andere heuvel (groot gebouw aan de wit rode hoge antennes die je daar ziet).
