Cap Gris-Nez (Audinghen, France)
Together with his brother the Cap Blanc-Nez, the Cap Gris-Nez is one of the most popular destinations of Flemings in northern France. Some 2.5 million people visit these sites every year. Together they form a so-called "Grand Site," meaning that the French also consider this one of their top destinations. In the North of France, only the Bay of the Somme has such recognition.
In recent years, many efforts have been made to make this area even more attractive to tourists. Mighty vantage points and beautiful plains. From here, on a clear day, you can see the white "falaises" (English chalk cliffs) of England!
The site can actually be divided into two parts:
- an upper part where the lighthouse is located as well as some spectacular viewpoints
- a lower part where the rocky beach is located as well as the popular seafood restaurant "La Sirène".
Best to visit both parts. From this beach a small road leads uphill. You then walk past homes that all have spectacular views of "La Manche." At the end of that road you also have a customs house: a small , stone hut where customs officers could shelter.
Visitor tips for the Cap Gris-Nez
Tip 1: If you want a mapped out hike, you can get an overview on the Nord-Découverte web site.
Tip 2: know that there are several viewpoints on the Cap Gris-Nez: walk them one by one, you will not be disappointed by the panoramic views you will see there. Look at our map to find them all.
Tip 3: Unfortunately, the Cap Gris-Nez lighthouse is not open to visit. If you love lighthouses and still want to actually visit one, check out our list of lighthouses. Did you know that only 6 of the total 25 lighthouses on the Opal Coast, the Belgian Coast, the Picardy Coast and Zeelandic Flanders can be visited?
Tip 4: Not far from the actual site of the Cap Gris-Nez is the Maison du Site des Deux Caps. This is a visitor center. There is also a store with many local products attached and you will also find brasserie/hotel "l'entre mers" right next door. It is a friendly person from Menen (Belgium) who runs this place. Usually there is also aphoto exhibition with beautiful pictures of the region outside the visitor center. A little further up the same street you will find the very interesting museum "Battery Todt" with one of the largest guns from World War II.
