General information about Museum aan de IJzer - Ijzertoren

Museum aan de Ijzer has an 84-meter-high (22+ floors) observation tower with the famous acronyms AVV-VVK ("All for Flanders, Flanders for Kristus"). The Ijzer Tower is considered a memorial of Flemish emancipation (recognized in 1986). Also memorial museum about World War I. Located on the inner harbor of Diksmuide, it is also a place of pilgrimage.

A visit (9.50 EUR for an adult, October 2025) typically begins by taking the elevator to the 22nd floor. There you can explore (behind glass) the panorama. Then you have the option to trek to the open-air platform (via a staircase that goes over several floors). Afterwards, you descend the tower and visit the actual Museum on the Yser. At least one theme is worked out on each floor. Take it from us: you won't be back down here in an hour. The exit, how could it be otherwise in contemporary museums, is via the museum store on the ground floor. Optionally, you can also visit a "barrack." This was set up outside at the foot of the tower. It was an emergency shelter from just after the First World War.

On Sept. 24, 2025, the Iron Tower was in the national news. The, however Flemish, minister of culture would halve government subsidies for this initiative. Wonder what impact this will have on operations. They used to receive some EUR 400,000 in annual subsidies.

Visitor tips Museum on the Yser - Iron Tower

General tips:
1) if you are looking for other nearby attractions, consult our Tourist map of Top.Vlaanderen.
2) You can consult our overview lists: by category ( e.g. timeline, size, ...) or by region
3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services

Tip 1:Wheelchair accessibility is not optimal. Although there is an elevator that takes you to the 22nd floor. There you can see the panorama (but not optimally since there are reflections on the windows, they are obviously not always clean, etc.). If you want to go to the open-air platform, you have to take an additional staircase. So with wheelchair this is not doable. Also visiting the simulated dugouts in the lower floors of the Iron Tower may not be doable for wheelchair users. Since we are not wheelchair users ourselves and cannot judge all this ourselves 100%, we recommend contacting the Museum on the Yser. They will be able to tell you what is or is not possible.

Tip 2: Museum visits are often done when the weather is not so good. Is a nice alternative when the weather is too bad. In this case, however, we think nice, clear weather is more of a plus. The museum is weather-independent in terms of content & presentation, but the panoramic view, of course, is not. The brighter the weather the more you will enjoy this visit. Imagine a foggy day... On the other hand, an upcoming storm front is again the ideal time to take beautiful landscape photos with dramatic skies. Decision ? Be sure to check what weather they are predicting. Dress accordingly. Do you possibly take binoculars yourself?

Tip 3: You can see the IJzer Tower well from other "Horizon 2025" vantage points in the province of West Flanders, for example. For example from the Belvédère tower on the Kemmelberg or the Warande tower in Middelkerke. Check out all the Horizon 2025 projects we have already visualized here. Discover them yourself!

Did you know that Top.Vlaanderen has a list of more than 130 viewpoints?
In this list there are already more than 80, on the map about fifty more.

Tip 4: To stay in the theme of memory tourism and within the region: visit the trenches in the "Dodenganck" go see them. Alternatively, go to the site of Oud-Stuivekenskapelle trek. There is also a small observation platform there.

Tip 5: From the Ijzertoren you can clearly see the transmitter mast of Houtem see. It is used for flash trading / high frequency trading.

Tip 6: You can already see it from the IJzertoren: the so-called "Aviators' Chapel." Nearby.
