General information about Chapel Count Paul de Goussencourt
The Chapel Count Paul de Goussencourt is also known by the name "Airmen's Chapel" or also "Memorial Chapel de Goussencourt." It is located near the Iron Tower.
In the Real Estate Heritage Agency inventory, we read the following about this site:
"Memorial Chapel de Goussencourt or so-called Airmen's Chapel. Inland memorial chapel. Founded in 1923 on the initiative of Count Stanislas Théodoor de Goussencourt and his wife in memory of their son Count Paul de Goussencourt, who lost his life as a sergeant aviator in May 1917 at the age of 25 during an aerial combat and crashed here."
The chapel really stands on the spot where the Count, along with his observer, lost his life in a Farman F40 in May 1917. Read more about it here.
Restoration works are currently underway. They were started on April 11, 2024. Was also necessary. Currently, however, everything is apparently at a standstill again. Further information is currently lacking.

Tip 1: You're right here near the Iron Tower / Museum at the Iron .. If you're not directly interested in the history of Flemish emancipation or World War I, you're definitely going to want to stop by because of the unique viewpoint over the Flemish polders.
Tip 2: Not so far from there you can visit the "Dodenganck": trenches from World War I. There is also a nice viewpoint over the Yser there.
