General information about ArcelorMittal
ArcelorMittal is one of the largest steel producers in the world. Next to the site of the former Sidmar in Belgium, among other things, they have a very large plant with no less than 4 blast furnaces in Grande-Synthe. This is in the port area of the City of Dunkirk. It was created by the merger of 3 factories, including the famous USINOR (which took over the Walloon Cockerill-Sambre in 1998) . You can see the steelworks very well from the dyke(Digue du Braek) leading to the Lighthouse "Le Feu de Saint-Pol". The site covers a total of about 7 km². This site has the advantage of being able to be supplied directly from coal and iron ore by sea vessels. We are actually talking about 2 sites located next to each other: Grande Synthe and Mardyck.
The installations are nothing short of breathtaking. You actually have to go see them up close to see just how grand everything is:
- there is a coking plant (where softer, impure coal is reprocessed into strong, purer coke),
- a sintering plant (where raw iron ore is burned and converted into purer sinter of the right grain size)
- blast furnaces (where iron ore is transformed into liquid steel),
- rolling mills (where steel sheets are made),
- a power plant (blast furnaces need pre-heated air),
- and so on.
At night, everything looks even more impressive: the photos below speak volumes. ArcelorMittal, formed from the merger of Arcelor with the Indian Mittal family, is the world's largest steelmaker, producing 100 million tons of steel a year. Today's largest blast furnaces have a furnace diameter of about 14 meters and can yield up to 3.6 million tons of steel a year.
On the site, there is an Engie gas power plant. It is known as DK6 and has been operational since 2005. Gross capacity there is of 790 megawatts. One third (255 MW) of this power goes to ArcelorMittal, the rest (535 MW) is sold on the general electricity market.

Visitor tips ArcelorMittal
General tips:
1) if you are looking for other nearby attractions, consult our Tourist map of Top.Vlaanderen.

3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services
Tip 1: Make sure you have a GPS with you as you move through the port of Dunkirk: after all, it is very large, several streets are dead ends and getting lost is a possibility. So a GPS is not an unnecessary luxury. ArcelorMittal can be found under gate numbers 2850-3000. If you look for these gate numbers you will end up at entrance gates to the plant and see the plant from the land. If you want a different view, via the sea, then go via the dike of Braek.
Tip 2: If you visit the ArcelorMittal site via the very wide embankment of Braek, it is best to walk up to the historic art deco lighthouse of Saint-Pol. At the foot of this lighthouse, you can also see a colony of seals see. Nice touch, right?
Tip 3: If you want to go to the factories at night (to take beautiful night photos there, for example), you cannot go via the dike of Braek: it will be closed. There is a parallel road on this dike, but it is a service road and may not be used by the general public.
