Project "50,000 Flowers for Flanders Fields"
In May/June 2024, the "50,000 Flowers for Flanders Fields" project runs. Thousands of allium bulbs were distributed to some 31 WWI memorial sites. People could also participate in this project privately. The flower bulbs were put in the ground during the period October-November 2023. More info on this project on the website of Tourism Westhoek.
Why was the ornamental onion chosen ? Poppies are the symbol of the English victims, cornflowers for the French, daisies for the Belgian. The allium was chosen to symbolize all other nationalities. It symbolizes protection and averting danger.
