General information about AstroLAB IRIS
AstroLAB IRIS is a particularly beautiful and interesting initiative: it is both a Project Observatory and a People's Observatory located near Ypres. A multi-disciplinary team of amateur astronomers united in the Astronomical Contact Group vzw, created two observatories in the Provincial Domain "De Palingbeek". For this they enjoyed the support of the Province of West Flanders, Europe (Interreg projects), City of Ypres and Flanders(Tourism Flanders). The project observatory works on all kinds of scientific and technical projects (international observing programs, spectroscopy, etc.), the people's observatory aims at informing the general public.
Everyone can therefore visit AstroLAB IRIS to learn more about the universe and space travel. Among other things, you can visit a rotating observation dome, watch a mirror being ground in the optical workshop, see a very large model of the International Space Station ISS, look at our Moon and planets through various telescopes, and so much more. One of the big attractions is the giant astronomical telescope NMPT-68: it has a mirror of 68 cm in diameter. And, uh, did you see how the entire roof of a building is moved before your eyes ? Interesting for the whole family! Suitable both for individual and group visits. Every year more than 100 groups visit this top location. Book on time via info@astrolab.be . Allow at least an hour and a half for the duration of your visit. Bet you will find it so interesting that you will wish you had booked longer.

One person has been studying the activity of our daily star, the Sun, for more than 40 years (just about every day).

with one of the telescopes, learn how to take an astrophoto, and so much more.

They also show how such mirrors are cut: they have an optical workshop.
