General information about land art installation "Les ancêtres"

In February 2021, the land-art installation "les ancêtres" ("the ancestors") was created in the Provincial Domain The Kemmelberg. It is located on the Kemmelberg hiking trail (8.0 km).

Basically, this is a living, but also only temporary, work of art. Indeed, the original intention was to have the artwork there for only one or two years (2021 / 2022). Years later, it is still standing there 😉.

Artist on duty is Jean-Louis Muller, a landscape artist and independent willow weaver from Blankenberge. Originally 9 "stones" were planned, eventually 7 were realized. In addition, there are also two solitary pin-like willow structures set up: they are the artistic interpretation of the iron/bronze axle pin of the wheel of a float once found on the Kemmelberg (from the era of the Celts). The pin was decorated with a bronze decorative crescent-shaped bronze plate with repetitive ternary decoration in the form of three times three half-moons ( source ).

At this work of art you will find the following explanation: "The artwork was created by dynamically braiding willow. The Kemmelberg as a refuge for many inhabitants of the past and visitors of today and as the setting of "les ancêtres", our ancestors. The structures make our past tangible: flints, tools from a distant past, iron sandstones or hiding places in an inspiring place. Go take a close look.".

Tip: From the terraces of the renowned hotel/restaurant Hostellerie Kemmelberg, situated on top of the Kemmelberg, you have a very nice view of the Franco-Flemish plain in general and this work of art in particular. You can also combine a walk with a visit to the "Belvedere" tower. This is part of the Horizon 2025 project of the Province of West Flanders.
