General information about Brothers-in-Arms Memorial
The Brothers-in-Arms Memorial is a new World War I memorial that was officially inaugurated on September 25, 2022. It is an initiative of Johan Vandewalle. At its center is a life-size bronze statue depicting two brothers: one of them embracing the other, who has been killed in action.
The impressive sculpture was created by Australian sculptor Louis Laumen. Benefactor Bill Gibbins paid $180,000 for the bronze statue. The park was designed by landscape architect Andy Malengier (also from Zonnebeke).
Congratulations to Johan Vandewalle and his team on this wonderful accomplishment. Much will be spoken and written about this Brothers-in-Arms Memorial Project(BIAMP).
Today, December 14, 2025, we received the sad news that benefactor Bill Gibbins, who made this project financially possible, passed away in early December. He was 77 years old.

Tip: Combine a visit to this memorial with other attractions in Zonnebeke: less than one kilometer away you will find the serene and beautiful ANZAC cemetery "Buttes New British Cemetery." Then continue to the "Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917" in the center of Zonnebeke and to the world-famous "Tyne Cot" in Passchendaele.
