General information about Groenendijk Water Tower

This beautifully designed water tower (say artwork) has been in production since 1969. At this moment, the water tower of Oostduinkerke is being extended with a public accessible staircase and elevator so that this unique viewpoint becomes easily accessible. Panoramic view over dunes, North Sea and polders. The site around the tower will also be opened to the public. From the new car park with its cosy reception area on Nieuwpoortsteenweg, a footpath will lead visitors through the natural relief of the site to the stairs and the elevator. From there, the trip up -a staggering 45 m high- can begin. Due to strict regulations regarding the safety of the production and storage of potable water, it is impossible to allow the general public access to the actual reservoir and technical installations. That is why a totally separate stair tower and elevator shaft were chosen.

Preliminary completion of the works was initially (2022) scheduled for the first half of 2024. Aquaduin had the works started in 2024. It is now a little longer before everything is finished. In principle, the opening is expected in early 2026. You can already see the end result below via this computer simulation (rendering). The design comes from TM Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter and Veldhuis Architectuur.
