General information about St. Folquinus Church
St. Folquinus Church is a so-called "hall church," built entirely of natural stone and brick. A hall church is a church in which the nave and side aisles are about the same height. After a fire in 1976, this church was completely restored in 1978. Its vaults are studded with wood and its stained glass windows are beautiful. And that is an understatement 😉 Most people go to Ekelsbeke to visit the castle and/or the park. And since the castle and the church are only about a hundred meters apart, a visit to this particular church is recommended.
You can even climb a tower there (75 steps) to get a panoramic view of the Ijzervlakte. Along the way, you will encounter the carillon with 23 bells. The carillon culture was designated a world heritage site by UNSECO. Note: the tower can only be visited with a guide. So consult the calendar because there are only occasional guided tours like this.
For those in the know, there is also a special organ ("mesotonic" tuning). Mesotone tuning is a tuning system used mainly in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, before the widespread introduction of equal temperament tuning. This makes some keys sound very pure and harmonious (such as C major, F major...), others more out of tune or even unusable.
