General information about The Romelaëre ponds

Officially, the ponds of Romelaëre, a particularly beautiful natural preserve, are called "Réserve naturelle nationale des étangs du Romelaëre" (in Clairmarais). For the French, this is of national importance. That says it all.

We visited this park, which is 104 hectares in size, in the summer of 2020 and can only confirm that this is a very well maintained and beautiful nature reserve . Everything takes place around the canals, ponds, bridges, chain boxes... and so on in the marshland of Saint-Omer (Saint-Omer). We also saw a very wide variety of common and aquatic plants (more than 200 species). Beautifully landscaped and easily accessible hiking trails (also doable for families with children). Frequented by many fishermen : there are dozens of specially maintained spots for them.

This unique wetland "Marais audomarois" has not gone unnoticed by UNESCO either. In 2013, it was recognized by UNESCO as the twelfth biosphere reserve in France ("réserve de biosphère de France"). Read more about this on Wikipedia.

  • 360-180° panoramic photo taken at one of the entrance points of this nature reserve
There is a large car park as well as a visitor centre "La Grange nature".
The water is never far away... so also bridges, water plants, fishermen, etc.
There are well-maintained hiking trails. Short and long(er) walks have been worked out.
This domain is also a godsend for the fishermen.
A nice surprise: at a certain moment you can only get to the other side via such a chain box. With some pushing and pulling, you can get to the other side. Amusing!
Boats can be rented at various places around the domain for trips.
Not far from the nature reserve itself is the "port fluvial": a small harbor where you can rent your own boat or go with a guide who will guide you through the marshland.
You can also go out with your own family with your own boat. Just be careful not to get lost between the hundreds of canals!
