General information about Ekelsbeke Castle
Ekelsbeke Castle is a medieval castle located in the book village of Esquelbecq (near Wormwood in Nord - Pas de Calais). Don't expect the same from Ekelsbeke as from the Ardennes book village of Redu. There is as much as one bookstore and the occasional book market. A day of "book browsing" is definitely not in the cards 😉
In the summer you can visit the landscaped gardens, vegetable gardens and park (7 hectares in total). In 2017 they won another award with these gardens. The castle itself can now be visited on well-defined days. See website for opening hours and modalities.

Tip 1:You can combine yourcombine your visit with a trip to thePlaine au Bois site, where theWormhout Massacre Memorial is located. A mass murder took place there during World War II. A memorial has now been erected. It is only a few kilometers from the center of Ekelsbeke.
Tip 2: Also walk the St. Folquinus Church inside: the vaults there are covered with wood, something you don't see everywhere. It gives the church, along with some beautiful stained glass windows, a moody, warm impression.
Tip 3: On the village square, next to the castle, you will find another piece of Flemish culture: a fritkot with really good fries. Be on time because on Sunday they close at 2pm sharp.
