General information about St. Martin's Cathedral
Ypres Cathedral is a beautiful cathedral from the time when Ypres had a bishop. Indeed, Ypres used to fall under the diocese of St. Omer. That had its own cathedral. See our separate page on the Notre-Dame Cathedral of St. Omer. In 1561, the diocese of Terwaan was dissolved into three dioceses: Boulogne-sur-Mer, Saint-Omer and Ypres. The church of St. Martin's Monastery (regular canons of St. Augustine) was then elevated to a cathedral. Cornelius Jansenius was the most famous bishop of the diocese of Ypres. Now the cathedral is known as St. Martin's Church.
The tower is 102 meters high and more than 20 paintings hang there. Cornelius Jansenius and Robrecht III of Bethune are buried in the church.
On Armistice Day, Nov. 11, of each year, the Last Post Association there a beautiful concert "The Great War Remembered." More info on this web site.
Visitor tips St. Martin's Cathedral
General tips:
1) if you are looking for other nearby attractions, consult our Tourist map of Top.Vlaanderen.
2) You can consult our overview lists: by category ( e.g. timeline, size, ...) or by region
3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services
Tip 1: Ypres is home to many attractions. For example, in the Ypres Cloth Halls, located right next to the cathedral, is the "Yper Museum". Ypres is known for its medieval history (Ypres was very well known and sought after for trading fine cloth - Cloth Hall and Belfry), its Vauban Fortresses (go check out the Lille Gate) and the central role it played here in the Westhoek in World War I. Witness the (recently fully restored) Menin Gate with its daily Charge and the numerous WWI cemeteries.
Tip 2: If you are interested in so-called "memory tourism," be sure to visit the In Flanders Fields Museum in the same Cloth Halls. For the same theme, you can also go to nearby Zonnebeke. Here is an overview of our selected sights of Zonnebeke.
Tip 3: You can hardly miss it: the Belfry of Ypres. Well worth a walk to the top.
Tip 4: If you want to see something truly original, go take a look at Saint George's Memorial Church. It is located just before the cathedral on the other side of the square. For us a "topper." Small & fine, warm.
