General information about Museum Louvre-Lens

The Museum Louvre-Lens is a branch of the great Louvre Museum in Paris. This museum opened its doors on December 4, 2012. On January 29, 2014, they were already able to welcome their millionth visitor. The creation of this museum was also part of a broader program involving the upgrading of the mining basin (recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The museum would add prestige to the region and provide additional employment opportunities. The large visitor numbers from the very beginning ( almost 900,000 in the first year of operation) are now no longer achieved. They are about halved, but still good for roughly 400,000 visitors a year!

Original collection arranged not thematically but according to a timeline. Several temporary exhibitions. One of the Top 125 tourist attractions in France.

Currently, the beautiful and interesting exhibition "Gothiques" is still running until the end of Jan. 2026. An aarader!

Visitor tips for the Louvre-Lens Museum

Tip 1: For the photographers among us: backpacks and such are not allowed inside. However, lockers are provided.

Tip 2: Besides the museum, the double terril of Loos-en-Gohelle is the must-see attraction.

Tip 3: If you love memory tourism, visit the nearby trenches of Vimy or the large Canadian monument.

The Louvre-Lens museum is located near the double terril 74/74a/74b. From the top you have a nice view of the museum and the city. Make no mistake: the large white building in the photo on the right is the Lens soccer stadium. The museum is right next to it (a bit more to the right, just out of view admittedly).
