General information about Markeymolen
The Markeymolen is an old post mill with three attics dating from 1797. Initially, it was a corn and oil mill, later only a corn mill. It was listed in 1949. The mill owes its name to the miller of the time: Joseph Markey.
The Province purchased it in 1980. The land was purchased by the Province from the Sint-Bartholomeus church council. The mill was restored to working order in 1993.
In the meantime, the mill fell into disrepair once again. There was also no longer a miller. In 2020, the mill was transferred to the town of Lo-Reninge for a symbolic euro. This transfer was approved by the provincial council on April 23, 2020. The reason for this was that, under the new Immovable Heritage Decree, the provincial government was no longer eligible for subsidies for the restoration of mills, whereas a city council still was. Through a mill management plan, the city may even be eligible for an increased heritage subsidy. The restoration and recommissioning of the mill was estimated at the time to cost around EUR 450,000 (see this press article).
We do not yet have a specific schedule for the new restoration. However, Lo-Reninge's multi-year plan (for 2026–2031) already states that the Markeymolen will be refurbished and restored .

Tip 1: The mill itself is currently closed to visitors. However, there are several other places in Lo that are well worth a visit: the visitor center of the cookie maker Jules Destrooper is one example.
Tip 2: From April 19, 2026, you can also visit the St. Peter's Church Tower for a panoramic view of the region.
Tip 3: The Stone Bridge over the Dode IJzer is also located in Pollinkhove and dates from the same period as the Markeymolen, namely the end of the 18th century.
Warning: In Lo-Reninge, there is a strict speed limit of just 30 km/h. There are many cameras in relation to the size of the village. Speed cameras are used extensively and GAS fines are issued. For Lo-Reninge, this has even become a large part of their annual municipal income. It is a kind of extra tax on tourists who drive through the village and are not familiar with these "uses."
