General information about Stone Bridge over the Dode IJzer
The Stone Bridge over the Dode IJzer is an old bridge that was built by the Austrians in the 18th century (in 1780, to be precise). It spanned what was then the IJzer. Now it is a closed branch of the IJzer, which is why it is referred to as the "Dode IJzer" (Dead IJzer) and "Oude IJzer" (Old IJzer). Within four years, this bridge will be 250 years old!
Across the bridge lies one of Belgium's oldest cobbled roads: the 125-meter-long cobbled section dates back to the time of the old stone road between Ypres and Veurne. On this page of Top.Vlaanderen , you Top.Vlaanderen more about"Flemish cobblestones."

Tip 1: It is good to know that administratively, the bridge is located in the municipality of Lo-Reninge (in the borough of Pollinkhove), but in fact it is practically in Elzendamme (a hamlet of Oostvleteren). So if you are looking for this historic bridge, head for Elzendamme, not Lo-Reninge or Alveringem.
Tip 2: The large transmission mast in Oostvleteren is nearby. Perhaps it's time to take a closer look. Consult our page on this subject.
Tip 3: Many families with children visit the animal shelter "De Zonnegloed", which is not far away.
Tip 4: The Markey Mill is also located in Pollinkhove and dates from the same period as the Markeymolen, namely the end of the 18th century.
