General information about Visitor Center Jules Destrooper
Jules Destrooperhas been the leading producer of almond and butter wafers since 1886. The company originally became famous for its wafer-thin almond rolls. In 1890, the famous butter wafers, known as "lukken," were added to the range. In many high-end establishments, you will receive these almond rolls or lukken as an extra treat with your coffee: a delicious, high-quality regional product (recognized since 2006)! In 1986, Jules Destrooper started a second production unit (bakery) in Ypres. They are recognized (certified) purveyor to the royal household.
In 2015, the family business was taken over by the Vandermarliere family, but the cookies are still baked according to the original, secret recipe.
You can get to know the producer of these delicacies at their visitor center at their headquarters in Lo-Reninge (in the borough of Lo). This was the original production site of this waffle baker. This completely renovated visitor center reopened in July 2020. It is located on the first floor. An elevator takes you there. The restrooms are located on the ground floor. There is also a tasting room where you can sample a variety of their delicacies. At the end of the visit, you can also walk through their shop, where you will find their entire range of products.
Every year now you also have the "Lukke festivities" in the village.
Warning: In Lo-Reninge, there is a strict speed limit of just 30 km/h. There are many cameras in relation to the size of the village. Speed cameras are used extensively and GAS fines are issued. For Lo-Reninge, this has even become a large part of their annual municipal income. It is a kind of extra tax on almost everyone who drives through the village and is unfamiliar with these "customs." So be careful!
