General information about Royal Sand Yacht Club
Anyone who thinks of De Panne almost immediately thinks of the wide sea beach. Difference between low tide and high tide provides as much as 500 meters of extra beach. De Panne has the widest (deepest) beach on the entire Belgian coast. And that gives the opportunity to land sailing with specially equipped carts, called sail carts for short. In total, some 17 kilometers can be land sailed (what a word 😉 ) on the Belgian coast in one piece.
The first recreational sailing cart was created by the architect Albert Dumont (in 1898). This architect gained quite a bit of fame through the Dumont neighborhood of De Panne named after him. But it was also he who made the first sailing cart, then still with a square sail, in our region. The first international races were held in Hardelot (1911) and Berck (1913) in France.
The Royal Sand Yacht Club (RSYC) is the largest yacht club in Belgium. Worldwide, with its 100 years, it is also the oldest sailing car club. They also organize occasional races with historic sailing cars. They have to be at least 25 years old to participate. Below you will find pictures of such a race that took place in 2024.
Another Historic Race would take place in 2025 and would be held on September 5 and 7, 2025. See website.
