General information about Boet Procession

The Boet Procession is an annual religious procession. This procession has passed through the town every last Sunday of July at 3:30 p.m. since the 17th century. It is then also Veurne Kermis, since ancient times a concept in this region. Next penitential procession is therefore on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

It is the so-called "Sodality" that organizes this procession. On the official website of this fraternity, we read: "Sodality" is a translation of the Latin word "sodalitas," which means "brotherhood." A member of this fraternity is called "sodalis" ; this is Latin for "comrade," "brother in an association." The members of this fraternity are easily recognized by their black cloak suit with red print and their distinctive red hats.

In the procession the "Standaert" of the Sodality is carried along and the life and Passion of Jesus Christ are depicted in a good twenty scenes in a colorful and lively way.

About the route followed we read the following on Wikipedia: "Every year, the Boet Procession follows a fixed route that starts in the city park near St. Walburga's Church and ends at the intersection of Zuidstraat, Nieuwstraat and Oude Beestenmarkt. The route counts 5751 steps, which corresponds to the number of footsteps Jesus would have traveled between his condemnation at the courthouse (the palace of the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate) to Golgotha Hill, the place of his execution. The procession ends with the transfer of the Cross of The Sodality and the Blessed Sacrament to St. Nicholas Church."

The Penitential procession has been on the Flemish Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2009. That means it is recognized by the Flemish government as valuable cultural heritage, but not (yet ?) by UNESCO at the international level.
