General information about the Ossenisse Radar Tower
The Ossenisse radar tower is an important, albeit unmanned, radar tower used to monitor and control shipping traffic on the Western Scheldt. The radar tower was commissioned in May 2018 and is 30 meters high. It is part of the so-called Scheldt Radar Chain (abbreviated as SRK). This Belgian-Dutch partnership, with around 30 radar stations, was inaugurated in 1991.
In July 2017, another new radar station was also put into operation at Ouden Doel, on the Belgian/Dutch border (near Nieuw Namen). It was built because a previous tower was located in the middle of a nature reserve and therefore had to be removed. At the time it was put into operation, this tower in Waasland was the tallest. Since May 2018, the one in Ossenisse has been the tallest.
The Ossenisse Radar Tower is accessible all year round via the metal external staircase. There are approximately 150 steps.

Tip 1: Climbing towers always involves a certain amount of risk. If you are afraid of heights, you need to be extra careful. Sometimes it is better to admire these imposing structures from a distance than to climb them! If you are not feeling mentally stable, it is better not to attempt it: a month after our visit, a couple took their own lives (see article in HLN, February 21, 2025 – for information: Belgium Suicide Hotline 1813).
