General information about the Canche Lighthouse
What Knokke is to the Belgian coast, Le Touquet, also known as Paris-Plage (so the full name is Le Touquet-Paris-Plage—quite a mouthful!), to the French Opal Coast. This seaside resort is also called Paris-Plage precisely because so many Parisians flock here on weekends and holidays to relax on the beach. It has a particularly beautiful lighthouse.
The Canche Lighthouse (Phare de la Canche) is one of the most striking landmarks on the Opal Coast and stands in the seaside resort of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, near the mouth of the Canche River. The current lighthouse was built after World War II and entered service in 1951. It replaced two older lighthouses dating from 1852 that were blown up in 1944 by retreating German troops. The tower is 57.6 meters high and has 274 steps leading up to the lantern.
It is noteworthy that it is not located directly on the coast but about 800 meters inland, because the coastline here is constantly shifting due to dune formation. The lighthouse’s powerful beam has a range of about 25 nautical miles (approximately 46 km) and helps ships navigate the busy shipping lanes of the English Channel.
The octagonal tower, built of brick and concrete, is a landmark in the landscape and weighs more than 3,000 tons. Today, the lighthouse is also a popular tourist attraction: visitors who climb the 274 steps are rewarded with an impressive view of the dunes, the Canche estuary, and the town of Le Touquet.
The lighthouse has been listed as a French historic monument since 2011, and the former keeper’s house now houses a small exhibition on the region’s maritime history. The lighthouse is so symbolic of the city that it even appears on Le Touquet’s coat of arms, along with the motto “Fiat Lux, Fiat Urbs” – “Let there be light, let there be a city.”
Update March 17, 2026: Renovation work is currently underway at the lighthouse, so it is not open to the public at this time.

Tip 1: When you're in Le Touquet, be sure to check out the covered market.
Tip 2: Definitely don't miss walking in the area around the lighthouse. You'll see beautiful villas and the renowned Le Westminster Hotel. Go in there to soak up the atmosphere and possibly have a cocktail or coffee in their authentic bar. This renowned hotel was completely renovated a few years ago and has reopened. Class of yesteryear!
