General information about Arras

Arras, capital of the French Pas-de-Calais, is known by many Flemish people for its two large squares, the Place des Héros (Place of Heroes) and the Grand Place (Grand Place ), and its colorful buildings with their typical facades. Indeed very nice to see and also nice to have a terrace. At the Place des Héros you also have the beautiful Belfry. Best to book in advance if you want to climb it in group. You can also just walk in to visit the book and souvenir shop and see the 6 giants of Arras.

And, um, it will probably be a shock its for many Belgians, but did you know that it is indeed in Arras that the World Fries Baking Championships ( "Championnat du Monde de la Frite" ) is organized? Really. The last time was on Sept. 27, 2025. You know the saying "If two dogs fight for a leg... it's the third who runs with it!". This was also the case here: it was not a Frenchman or a Belgian who won this 3rd edition, but a ... Dutchman namely. Siem Burggen. Congratulations 😉 .

A very nice time to visit Arras is around Christmas. Every year they organize a large and cozy Christmas market there. Visit in the evening, then you get to see all the illuminated facades just like that. Very nice to see!

Although you can already make a day-filling program in Arras itself (among other things, you can descend into the limestone quarries under the Belfry - make a reservation for this in advance - or visit the abbey cum large cathedral of Saint-Vaast / Vedastus), and so on. You can also easily combine your visit to Arras with, for example, the Canadian Memorial of Vimy, the Anneau de la Mémoire, the Louvre Lens museum, etc. . All of these are not so far away.
