General information about The flobart

The flobart (sometimes also written as "flobard") was at the time the type of boat used by fishermen on the Opal Coast. The above plaque in the fishing village of "Le Portel" (located near the monument to the missing at sea) reminds us of it. The term " flobart" is thought to come from the Flemish word "vlot-baar", the ability to float.

There is an association dedicated to actions to preserve the memory of these boats: "Association Flobarts des 2 Caps" (based in Wissant). See https://www.flobart.org/. They buy up such types of boats and restore them. In doing so, they receive the support of the Museum of the Navy of Etaples. In this museum, which is free to visit, one such boat is also on display. The association also organizes an annual celebration namely "La fête du flobart": the 35th edition took place on August 22, 23 and 24, 2025. Here are some pictures of that edition. They have been closing the summer season in Wissant with this celebration since 1989. There is always a mass followed by a sea devotion. Afterwards, they launch the flobarts with the help of the impressive Boulonnais draught horses.

The association is also the driving force behind "La Maison du pêcheur": a museum cottage furnished as it was in 1920. Address: 2 rue Louis Blanc, Wissant. Earlier in the season, a "Feast of the Flobart and the Sea" also takes place in Ambleteuse. This year it was on August 9 and 10, 2025. See below for a selection of beautiful photos about it.

When a boat was shipwrecked, one could still use them as a base for housing. One then placed the boat upside down and used it as a roof. This is how the "quilles en l'aire".

Tips for the Feast of the Flobart

Tip 1: There is a relatively large crowd coming for this party. Getting there on time is the message, especially if you need parking for your car. The downtown area is pretty much closed to traffic and there are some additional parking lots provided outside the village. It is a bit of a walk to the village. Possibly too far for people with mobility problems.

Tip 2: In the afternoon, wait times at sandwich bars, coffee shops, etc. can get serious. Bringing some extra drinks or a snack with you might not be a luxury, unless you have a sea of time of course 😉.
