The Flemish Cobblestone - Cobblestones

Cobblestones: pure nostalgia for many Flemish people, hardship for cycling enthusiasts (in a so-called "cobblestone race"). Cobblestones are pieces of porphyry cut to size.

In May 2025, the Flemish media reported that quite a few tourists were taking cobblestones from our historic cities (such as Bruges) as souvenirs. Don't do it. 😉

Here are four special cobbled roads in Flanders:
1) Steenstraat in Houthulst (an old Roman road)
2) the cobbled sections of Wallers-Arenberg (famous from the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic)
3) Kemmelbergweg (known from the cycling classic Gent-Wevelgem)
4) a 125 m stretch on the "Stenen Brug" bridgeover the "Dode Ijzer" river(Elzendamme, Oostvleteren, Belgium).
