General information about the In Flanders Fields Museum
In Flanders Fields Museum (abbreviated as IFFM) is a museum that deals with World War I in the Westhoek as a front region. It used to be called simply the "War Museum 14-18." On the occasion of the 100-year commemoration, in advance of the then re-emerging memory tourism, the concept was completely rethought and redesigned in a contemporary way. In the 2014 year of remembrance, this allowed the museum to record some 400,000 visitors. In the meantime, visitor numbers have dropped to about 150,000 per year, which is actually less than in the days of the old "war museum." In 2002, 222,100 visitors were recorded. Anyway, it is still worthwhile to visit this modern museum, especially with children and grandchildren. The "Great War" must not be forgotten. Never!

Besides the completely renovated museum, there is also a large knowledge center about World War I. Officially, it is called the "Center for Historical & Archaeological Aerial Photography" (abbreviated as CHAL). It was founded in 2014 by the Province of West Flanders, the Department of Archaeology of Ghent University and the IFFM. We read about it, "The three partners hereby work together around historical aerial photographs from the First and Second World Wars. These images offer unique opportunities for scientific research, museum and tourist access to historical sites in the former battlefields and are a source of information for spatial planning processes and heritage management."

The museum is located on the second floor of the Ypres Cloth Hall. You also get access to the Belfry Tower. In the same building you will also find the Ypres "Tourist Office", a museum café and a museum shop. Admission to the museum is free for city residents, others pay 12 EUR (21/9/2025). Audio guides are provided.

Tip 1: For an extra 2 EUR you can also visit the Belfry of Ypres up. Combine this with your admission ticket.
Tip 2: Ypres has a lot of attractions. In the building , the Ypres Cloth Halls, itself there is also the "Yper Museum". Ypres is both known for its medieval history (Ypres was very well known and sought after for trading fine cloth - Cloth Hall and Belfry), its Vauban Fortresses (go check out the Lille Gate) and of course the central role it played in World War I. Witness the (recently fully restored) Menin Gate with its daily Charge and the numerous WWI cemeteries.
Tip 3: If you are really interested in the so-called "memory tourism", then you should definitely also go to nearby Zonnebeke. Here is an overview of selected sights of Zonnebeke.
Tip 4: For photographers: it is a particularly "dark" museum. In fact, it's so dark there that certain visitors clearly have trouble with it (you can read about it in reviews). For photographers, it is not easy either: even at ISO 3200 and a brighter f/2.8 lens, you will have to work with shutter speeds of around 1/30s. HDR photography is difficult(er). Reportedly, except for special permissions, photo tripods are not allowed. This would be nothing special because in many museums this is prohibited. However, we did not see this explicitly mentioned in the visitors' regulations. So perhaps it is best to inquire in advance if you want to use a tripod.
