General information about the "Risban" lighthouse
Dunkirk has no fewer than three lighthouses. This old Risban lighthouse is located at the port of Dunkirk and dates from 1842. It is managed by the Port Museum and can be visited on Sundays. When people refer to "the Dunkirk lighthouse,"they are referring to this one.
Not to be confused with the art deco lighthouse “Le Feu de Saint-Pol" located on the long pier. This one is not open to visitors. There are always seals nearby.
Did you know that there is even a very old lighthouse in the middle of the city? It was part of a 15th-centuryfortress: the "Toren van de Leughenaer," is 30 meters high. It is said that false signals were sometimes given to the maritime world with the intention of deliberately causing ships to run aground so that they could be plundered. Hence the name. 😉
