Algemene info over BTC Zendstation Egem
BTC Zendstation Egem heeft een heel hoge zendmast: deze is maar liefst 305 m hoog, dus iets lager dan de Eifeltoren. Ze werd in 1973 opgericht en verving een mast die in Aalter stond. Vroeger werd de mast eerst gebruikt voor analoge TV uitzendingen van de huidige VRT, nadien voor digitale TV. Nu is de mast vooral in gebruik voor digitale radio uitzendingen en mobiele telefonie. Het zou momenteel nog steeds de hoogste constructie in België zijn. Op wereldvlak staat die op de 51 ste plaats qua hoge zendmasten (zie lijst).
De hele constructie berust op één centraal punt. Die draagt het volledige gewicht. De stabiliteit komt door vele opgespannen stalen kabels die de mast verbinden met ingegraven betonnen sokkels.
