General information about Pyramid" of Bullescamps
Officially, this tower is called "the chimney of Bullescamps." It stands at the highest point in Pas-de-Calais: 212 meters high. However: this has nothing to do with a chimney of some furnace. Nor is it a mill without sails.
What is it? It is a geodesic tower. Geodesy is the science that deals with the shape and dimensions of the Earth. It was used to suspend an instrument to enable accurate positioning. In the tower with dropped a lead line. This was not allowed to move at all. So it had to be free of draughts, so it was hung in this masonry tower. It was built at the end of the 19th century by the geographical service of the French army. At that time, they wanted to have more accurate maps and so accurate measurements had to be possible. These measurements were carried out mainly in the North and East of France, from where they expected difficulties and possible invasions.
The person taking the measurements had to get to the top of the tower (about 14 m high) via a specially constructed wooden scaffolding. There he could operate his measuring instrument, a so-called theodolite.
The little monument that stands in front of the tower in the official geodesic memorial ( IGN ). The text that is on it has become virtually illegible due to the ravages of time.
