General information about the cycling classic "Gent-Wevelgem"
The sport of cycling has its origins in Flanders. There are several cycling classics. Of these, undoubtedly the "Tour of Flanders" and the "Tour de France" will sound familiar. If you want to experience such an event up close in our region, the best place to do so is the cycling classic "Gent-Wevelgem". This race was held for the first time on September 9, 1934. In this race, the cyclists, or "coureurs" as they are popularly known, normally have to climb the Kemmelberg twice, which is often the decisive point of the race. A beautiful Flemish popular event!
Since 2017, the so-called"Plug Streets" have also been part of the course. These are unpaved roads in Ploegsteert.
Normally, "Gent-Wevelgem" is run on the last Sunday in March.
On March 27, 2019, at a press event, the new cycling route "Ghent-Wevelgem In Flanders Fields" suggested. As an amateur cyclist, you can now ride much of the Gent-Wevelgem course yourself.
