General information about Menin Gate - Last Post & November 11

Every day again, in principle at 8 p.m. sharp, the "Last Post" is blown under the Ypres Menin Gate. This is in memory of all the fallen soldiers of World War I.

This ceremony has been taking place for 92 years: the first "Last Post" was blown on Monday, July 2, 1928. It lasts let's say about 10 minutes. When there are many flower-laying ceremonies or special events, such as Armistice Day celebrations on November 11, the ceremony lasts considerably longer. Then quickly count on 30 to 45 minutes (or longer).

Tip 1: Try to be on site at least half an hour before the ceremony starts if you want to have one of the better seats. Larger events may require you to go even earlier. Be sure to check the calendar on the Last Post Association website.

Tip 2: Know that November 11 , due to memory tourism, is a busy time for Ypres and the surrounding area in terms of hospitality. Reserve your room(s) and seats on time .

Around November 1, the park around the Menin Gate is literally put in flowers (with commemorative poppies).

During larger Last Post ceremonies, "poppies" (poppies) swirl down from the openings in the ceiling of the Menin Gate.
