Equestrian trail in the Schipgatduinen (Koksijde, Belgium)

The Schipgatduinen is a beautiful piece of unspoiled dunes that lies on the border area between Oostduinkerke-bad and Koksijde-bad. There is a Ruiterpad that runs right through it and ends at the beach of Sint-André. This extra strip of 500 meters was made available in 2020. On the other side of the Royal track you will find the Doornpanne as a dune area. You can reach the Ruiterpad via the Debusscherestraat. On the G. Scottlaan there is parking for a horse trailer.

The West Coast Equestrian Route runs parallel to the coastline from De Panne to Oostduinkerke and provides a connection to the riding schools and the beach. Actually, it is a network of bridle paths in the coastal municipalities of De Panne and Koksijde, consisting of three routes that connect with each other: the Moerenruiterroute (22 km), the Calmeynruiterpad (4 km) and the Panne Equestrian Trail (12 km). These trails run through the coastal communities' dune landscape and offer opportunities for both short and long (horse) walks.

Interesting to know: Can you just walk on bridle paths in Belgium?
- On paved network (over public roads): bridle paths are indicated by blue sign.
You may legally walk there, unless a specific notice prohibits it.
- In Flanders, bridle paths exist, but they are usually on private or municipal land.
Hikers are often allowed to use them, unless there is a prohibition sign.
- In forests , this falls under the "general right of trespass":
you can walk there freely (limited by signposts and signs for mountain bikers, horsemen, hunting, etc.).
