German Military Cemetery (Langemark, Belgium)
There are actually not very many German cemeteries in the Westhoek. The German Military Cemetery is located in Langemark. In this quietly located and particularly beautifully landscaped cemetery lie mostly young German soldiers (44,000 in total), which is why it is also referred to as the "Student Cemetery." The cross-shaped and flat memorial stones as well as the moat surrounding this cemetery are the most characteristic elements of this place.
Just outside the cemetery, a new monument was also installed, "The Poppy Cenotaph." This is built entirely around 2016 poppies, the iconic flower for all things World War I related. The poppies were forged by children from various European countries. The monument was inaugurated in early November 2016. A peace register is available at the monument, where any visitor can leave a message of peace.
