General information about the seaside resort of Witzand
Witzand (say in French "Wissant") is a charming seaside resort on the French Opal Coast. Many will simply drive past the village as they travel down the Opal Coast via departmental road D 940. However, it is well worth a visit. Many painters have done it before you. There is even talk of a real "Wissant school of painting": all over the village there are information boards on easels referring to a painter who painted a scene in that place.
The dike was completely renewed not long ago. From the dike you can see very well the Cap Blanc-Nez on the right and, in clear weather of course, the chalk cliffs of England. On the western (left) side, you can see the Cap Gris-nez.
At first sight the dike looks rather concrete and rocky and tight, but make no mistake: on both ends of this dike there are real sandy beaches where you can go swimming. On the western side of the seawall you have a very good view of the bay. There are also numerous benches where you can quietly observe everything. This is also where you will find the most iconic bench in all of the Opal Coast: it can be seen in thousands of photos. No wonder it is... usually occupied 😉 Location of this bench: Google Maps.

From the dike you can see Cap Blanc-Nez very well. Occasionally you can also see the large tug/rescue ship "Abeille Normandie" lying there. This is always on standby in case ships or people get into trouble on "The Channel" / "The Strait of Kales". Did you know that we keep a list of such popular vessels in Flemish waters?

Shots of the iconic Hôtel de la Plage
As also briefly featured in the broadcast of "Échappées belles" S19 - "Côte d'Opale, entre vents et marées" on France 5: the iconic "Hôtel de la Plage" in Wissant, broadcast on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. She was also featured, among others, in Claude Lelouch's film "L'amour avec des si" (1964). For that film (shot in 1962), scenes were shot in Wissant and even ín the Hôtel de la Plage.
