General information about Ten Bogaerde
Ten Bogaerde is an abbey farm that originally belonged to the Duinenabdij (Dune Abbey) in Koksijde. We are talking about the High Middle Ages (around 1148). The first mention of "Bongart" (orchard) dates back to 1183. In 1950, it housed an agricultural school. Currently, you will find an art gallery, a home brewery, and a gourmet restaurant there. Soon there will also be a museum.
Did you know that... the monks and abbot at Duinen Abbey, of which Ten Bogaerde was an outlying estate , were not allowed to talk in the past? Verbal communication was reduced to an absolute minimum.
The general public will also know the site "Ten Bogaerde" because of the fact that a sperm whale once washed ashore on the coast, which was named"Valentijntje"because it washed ashore around the time of Valentine's Day, and which was temporarily buried in front of this abbey farm. In the meantime, Valentijntje was excavated and its skeleton can now be seen in the NAVIGO National Fisheries Museum.
You may have already noticed the Ten Bogaerde building complex when you visited Koksijde Air Base . It is located directly opposite this air base, the home base of the NH90 rescue helicopters.
We use the label"Work in Progress"because a project is currently underway that can be seen as an extension/addition to the Abbey Museum. The municipality has allocated a budget of 2.5 million euros for this project. In summary, this project involves work on both the church barn and the Degeyter warehouse (built in 1984). The roof of the church barn has been renovated. At the time, this investment was estimated at over 590,000 euros. The church barn will house reception facilities and part of the museum collection. Approval for the restoration/repurposing of Loods Degeyter dates from April 29, 2024.
The most important masterpieces of the Dune Museum will eventually be housed in "Ten Bogaerde." The warehouse will utilize the box-in-box principle: a building will be installed within the existing building, as it were. This will create a space that can be kept under perfect climatic control, making it ideal for storing and exhibiting masterpieces. After all, fluctuations in temperature and/or humidity could damage these valuable museum pieces. The building will also be completely climate-neutral. In a former pigsty on the abbey farm, the "St. Idesbald" home brewery has been housed. It has been operational since October 2020.
In 2024, two new orchards were also planted.

Tip 1: The abbey farm was an outlying estate of Ter Duinen Abbey. Visit the Ten Duinen Abbey Museum in Koksijde if you want to learn more about life in those days.
Tip 2: Be sure to visit the Zuid-Abdijmolen(South Abbey Mill). It is located directly opposite the abbey museum.
In summary: if you want to get a general idea of what the large Abbey of Ter Duinen used to be like, visit the three sites: the museum (with the accompanying ruins), the mill, and this abbey farm.
Tip 3: Around Christmas time, you can see beautiful Christmas lights at the roundabout near "Ten Bogaerde": a 1/2 scale model of the former Sea King. Santa Claus included!
Tip 4: If you would like to see another very large abbey barn, visit Ter Doest. It is very impressive, especially in terms of volume. We also made a 360° spherical image of it: it's just like standing in this historic barn yourself!
