General information about St. Anne's Chapel
Sint-Annakapel is a renovated chapel, not so far from the Poelberg near Tielt, which has now become mainly a small event location: on the ground floor you have small hall where activities (events) can take place, at the top an observation platform was created. It is right next to the Meikensbossen and is visited by many recreational cyclists. The platform is basically always open. Inside the chapel there are 2 rooms available, one on each floor.
Oh yes, we would almost forget to mention it but a St. Anne's Chapel, or also St. Anne's Chapel for short, is a chapel dedicated to Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary.
This project came about in the framework of the Horizon 2025 project of Westtoer, the autonomous company of the Province of West Flanders that deals with the promotion of tourism within the province of West Flanders. During this multi-year project, about twenty locations were arranged in such a way that they can serve as viewpoints over the region. The Saint Anne's Chapel is not exactly the location you go to because of the panorama you get there: the platform is not that high and you don't get a panorama you can't already see from the ground. Moreover, about half of the view is already taken away by the nearby Motorhome Site 't Meikensbos. In terms of views, it could be rather a disappointment for quite a few people. The wow-effect is missing in that area.
Architecturally, on the other hand, the whole thing is well worth seeing (architectural firm DMOA). Together with DMOA and the Research[x]Design lab of KU Leuven, the Kortrijk architect Lie Bormans (26) has won one of the most prestigious design awards, the "Henry van de Velde Awards" (the 2024 GOLD award). Among other things, we read this, "Robotic serendipity is a process by which unique concrete textures can be designed and made on an architectural scale via craft and robotics.". "Serendipity" refers to a happy accident - an unexpected find that turns out positively without you consciously looking for it. In the pictures below you will see a detail shot of a concrete wall: it is composed of all different building blocks. Yet you obtain a certain form of uniformity that results nicely in walls.
As an event location or as a stopping place for cyclists, hikers, motards, car tourists, .... we can, especially because of the nearby Meikensbossen, definitely recommend this place. What an atmosphere must not hang here in and around the chapel on a summer evening with a nice drink in hand! In any case, you'll have to be careful because alcohol and towers don't really go well together 😉.

Tip: A nice extra, for most people anyway, is that when you move onto the viewing platform you are filmed by a webcam. As far as we can immediately recall: a unique feature within the Horizon 2025 program. In principle, all locations are monitored with IP cameras but those images are only kept for security reasons and therefore not broadcast. Here they are. So you can wave to the people sitting (digitally) at home. Do it, it's fun! You can see the webcam here. A nice find for today's tourist who wants to keep up with the times. You can also immediately see how busy or quiet the net is at a certain moment. An added value in our opinion. Of course, there will always be people who will see certain problems through the webcam. Anyway, it's hard to do right by everyone. The tourist has been warned that it will be filmed and broadcast live on the worldwide Internet. So they can take notice.
