General information about The Lille Gate
The Lille Gate is a historic gate from the 14th century with Burgundian towers that is now part of the Ypres fortifications. These fortifications are an example of Vauban fortifications. The gate and its towers were beautifully restored a few years ago. Especially in autumn, this tower looks picturesque in the middle of a park area with yellow-brown colored trees.
Did you know ... the Lille Gate, including its towers, is beautifully illuminated at night? With "warm white" lighting spots. Gives interesting opportunities for the photographers among us. But there's more: on special days, this whole place is set in a well-defined color. For example, on the Irish holiday, the whole thing is lit in green. Just to name one example. Tip 1: The body of water in front of the Rice Tower, called the Castle Moat, is used for recreational purposes. Further up, the Kasteelgracht merges into the Majoorgracht. You can see dozens of jetties built specifically for fishermen. There is a footpath that runs partly over the Ypres fortifications, already over the Lille Gate, and further still around this moat. You then come in front of a small historic island, dating back to the Spanish occupation. You will find the catering establishment 't Eilandje (brasserie & restaurant, with terraces offering a nice view). You can also rent boats to sail on the Kasteelgracht.
Tip 2: In bright freezing weather, the Castle Moat can freeze over completely and then it is fun to skate there. This last happened in 2009. See our photo section.
Tip 3: Through the Lille Gate is an important approach road to downtown. You can take nice long exposure shots there at night: if you set the exposure shots right, you can capture nice light trails through the Lille Gate . Tip 4: Right next to this Rise Tower there is a British cemetery: the Ramparts Cemetery. Take a walk past it. If you go to the back, you will see graves close to the water. You will immediately see how idyllic this place is. We show you a spherical 360° shot of it here(Image taken on May 8, 2020).
