General information about Oud-Stuiveskenskerke
Oud-Stuiveskenskerke is a small hamlet of the town of Stuivekenskerke, which in turn is a borough of Diksmuide. It was already inhabited in the 12th century and archaeological excavations have been conducted on this site. The general site is managed by the City of Diksmuide.
The war site itself is called the "Our Lady's Corner." It is managed by the non-profit organization "The Friends of the corner of Our Lady in Oud-Stuivekenskerke" (1954). In addition to a memorial chapel called "Our Lady of Salvation", there is also a watchtower. This was built on the ruins of a former church and bunker. The memorial chapel has very beautiful stained glass windows (see photos below) and from the tower one has a view of this chapel and the surrounding polders. The chapel was designed by the Veurn reconstruction architect Camiel Van Elslande (who, among other things, also designed Castel Mino in the Dumont neighborhood of De Panne). There is also a small bunker where you can peek inside.
There is also a picturesque walking trail next to a beautiful watercourse. There is a pic-nic facility and a small parking lot. In short, worth a visit anyway to this place in-the-middle-of-nowhere. Respect for our Belgian ancestors who fought for our freedom there. Now peace reigns!

Tip 1: The legendary "Dodenganck" (trenches from WW1) is not so far from there. Besides the trenches, you also have a nice viewpoint there with panoramic views over the Ijzer and the City of Diksmuide.
Tip 2: Nature lovers, and especially the so-called "birdwatchers," will be able to indulge in the nature reserve the Vicionia Clay Wells.
