General information about Our Lady's Cathedral

Cathedral of Our Lady is a particularly large cathedral (no less than 134 meters long!) located in the center of Tournai. The last great anniversary of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tournai (Tournai) is its 850th anniversary: it was consecrated on May 9, 1171. Certain pieces even date as far back as 1145. Recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

In 1999 there was a tornado that compromised stability. Work has been going on for years (and probably for years to come). Hopefully one day we will get to see this ancient cathedral without scaffolding. Only part of the huge cathedral can be visited.

Visitor tips Our Lady's Cathedral

General tips:
1) if you are looking for other nearby attractions, consult our Tourist map of Top.Vlaanderen.
2) You can consult our overview lists: by category ( e.g. timeline, size, ...) or by region
3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services

Tip 1: If you want to take a very nice overview photo of the cathedral and the landscape around it, head for the hills around Tournai. You can do this, for example, at the panoramic hotel "Le Panoramique" on Mont Saint-Aubert (also called simply Floreal Mont-Saint-Aubert ). If you want to take night photos like us (see our results below), book a room on the valley side. During the day, already check that you are comfortable in terms of visibility.

Tip 2: Tournai also has a Belfry. The tower is about 72 meters high and dominates Tournai's Grand Place. It is accessible. There is a staircase with some 257 steps. Belfriesare UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
