List of Lighthouses
General information about this list of lighthouses
Top.Flanders' List of Lighthouses gives a complete overview of all lighthouses of the Opal Coast, the Somme, the Belgian coast and Zeelandic Flanders. Did you know that only 6 of the total of 25 lighthouses can be visited? What is striking about this is that not a single lighthouse on the Flemish coast is open to the public. Too bad! You have to go to the Opal Coast or Zeeland Flanders anyway. The effort to get to the top is invariably made up for by mighty panoramas - they are simply mighty viewpoints of the sea, the seaports and the land behind (hinterland, polders).
The list below was created based on information obtained from our own top.vlaanderen visits to lighthouses, consultation of the database of Real Estate Heritage (Flanders, Belgium), Wikipedia and various tourist websites.
Note that people do not always use the term "lighthouses": sometimes they also refer to "light towers" and sometimes to "shore lights."
Tips related to lighthouses
Tip 1: Did you know that in addition to lighthouses, you can also visit lightships? There is one, namely the "Sandettié", at the Harbour Museum of Dunkirk (France) and one in Antwerp (Belgium): the "West-hinder 3".
Tip 2: If you're visiting a lighthouse, it's best to check visiting hours carefully first. Many are only open to a limited extent or only for groups.
Tip 3: Know that when you visit a lighthouse it's best not to have too much vertigo (popularly called "fear of heights") and also not to be too claustrophobic.
Tip 4: Once you reach the top of a lighthouse it can sometimes be quite windy. Prepare for that and bring a windproof jacket. Also know that in strong gusts of wind, the entire structure may vibrate and/or move with it a bit.
