General information about Strasbourg Christmas Market

The Strasbourg Christmas Market is considered one of the most beautiful and largest in Europe. According to several sources, approximately 2 million people visit this Christmas market every year. That is 2 to 3 times as many as the already large Christmas market in Arras. They call themselves "Capitale de Noël." Well, nowadays you are what you say you are, right?

Anyway, we visited in 2023 and it must be said: it's really worth it. The houses with centuries-old half-timbering and the imposing Strasbourg Cathedral provide a beautiful backdrop. And of course there are the world-famous bears on the facades of the "Au Vieux Strasbourg, " "Au Tire Bouchon, " and so on. Otherwise, it is of course a Christmas market like so many others: various squares with numerous Christmas stalls, beautifully decorated facades, and Christmas decorations in all the shop windows.

By the way, the locals call their Christmas market the "Christkindelsmärik."

Did you know that... enormous security measures are being taken to prevent attacks? There was already an attack in Strasbourg (on December 11, 2018), so people are being extra cautious. Barricades have been erected everywhere and teams of gendarmes are standing by with machine guns. The city center is located within a ring canal and all bridges, the access points to the Christmas market, are relatively easy to secure.

Tip 1: The main tourist attractions in Strasbourg are the Cathedral and the European Parliament. You can also take a tourist boat tour (but we found it rather a rip-off: too many people in too little space, short sailing time, crying children, unnecessary explanations, etc.).

Tip 2: If, like us, you are staying in a hotel in the very center of Strasbourg, you will need a special permit (document). Without this document, you will not be able to enter the cordoned-off perimeter with your car and luggage. Even with the document, you can still expect a thorough check (we even had to open the trunk and suitcases). Just so you know, of course.

Tip 3: One of Strasbourg's specialties is foie gras. There are even Christmas stalls where you can buy French bread topped with foie gras. Go for it (if you have no moral objections, of course)! You can also sample it in one of the many restaurants. Order a Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive to go with it. This is a delicious sweet white wine made from overripe grapes. It's even more expensive than Champagne, but oh so delicious! We were guests at the restaurant "Au Dauphin," just in front of the cathedral. Highly recommended.
