General information about Fortified Castle of Bouillon
Fortified Castle of Bouillon is a fortified castle standing on a high, rocky hill in the middle of the city of Bouillon in the Belgian Ardennes. More than 1,000 years old and therefore unique in itself. It is one of the oldest and best preserved medieval castles in the Ardennes.
Knight Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1060-1100) fought as a Crusader. He was one of the main leaders of the First Crusade (1096-1099). He needed to finance an army, so he sold or pawned his castle to the prince-bishop of Liege(Otbert of Liege). He could buy it back later but that did not happen because he died unexpectedly. He was eventually buried in Jerusalem.
