General information about Groot Begijnhof
The Great Beguinage is a very beautiful and vast beguinage. It dates back to the 13th century and at one point in the 17th century housed as many as 360 beguines. Recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Currently it has been converted into a residential yard.

Tip 1: Want examples of other beguinages? Then go to the Princely beguinage "Ten Wijngaerde" in Bruges or Beguinage Sint-Elisabeth in Kortrijk for example. Both are also highly recommended!
Tip 2: Inform yourself well before visiting the site because currently, in late October 2025, major works are underway. Best to pick another time to visit.
