General information about Escale à Calais
Escale à Calais is a (smaller), annual maritime event that goes on in Bassin Carnot of the Port of Calais. There are only a few ships to visit, but what makes it special is that there is also a re-enactment of the battle between two pirate ships (at least, that was so in the 2025 edition, which ran from Aug. 29 to 31, 2025). Furthermore, there are many booths on all kinds of subjects: a model maker, painters, photographers and graphic artists, maritime clothing, and so on. Several organizations also have a booth there such as, for example SOS Blootland, an organization dedicated to promoting the Flemish language and culture in French Flanders. There are also several performances where sea shanties are sung, among other things. One can also admire Boulonnais horses there. Tip 1: The event takes place in the shadow of the Calais Lighthouse. If you have time, be sure to visit it: you'll get a great view of the port and the entire city.
Tip 2: The whole city of Calais is under the spell of "dragons." Be sure to go discover the mechanical artificial dragon on Calais beach. At the end of 2025, it will even have a dragon as a companion.
