General information about Les Dunes de Flandre
On August 29, 2025, Anthony Raes, mayor of the northern French municipality of Ghyvelde, posted the redeeming message "Les Dunes de Flandre viennent d'obtenir le prestigieux label national Grand Site de France !". For more than 10 years, 4 municipalities/cities (namely: Bray-Dunes, Dunkirk, Leffrinckoucke and Zuidkote) worked together to obtain the prestigious national label "Grand Site de France". The designation "Grand Site de France" was created by the French state in 2003. It is a registered trademark and you don't just do whatever you want with it. Achieving it is no easy matter.
Within the region described by Top.Vlaanderen , only 2 other regions have such a label viz. the Site of the 2 Capes (say the Cap Gris-Nez and the Cap-Blanc-nez) and the Bay of the Somme. So in the foreseeable future we will see the logo signs below hanging out to demarcate the area.
On Oct. 4, 2025, we were already able to photograph the next new information board:
And like any "grand site," this one will have a visitor center "Maison du Grand site de France." This will be housed at "Ferme Nord" in Zuidkote. Work on it, estimated at a whopping 9 M€, is said to start this fall. You can read more about it here. You can find the exact location of this building complex on Open Street Maps here.
By the way, did you know that the quality of the bathing water at Les Dunes de Flandre beaches, everywhere is "Good" or even "Excellent"? This according to the Regional Agency for Health (ARS). Only the seawater at the Bray-dunes aid station was rated "Satisfactory". A plus for "Les Dunes de Flandre"!
Geographical description of Dunes de Flandre
The recognized Dunes de Flandre area extends from Dunkirk to de Panne, roughly say about 15 km of northern French coastline. Of course, this includes not only the beach and dunes but also the polders behind them, the bunkers and windmills located there, and so on. Remembrance tourism is also covered, just think of "Opération Dynamo" that took place here during World War II.
Actually, you can say that the dune area is the continuation of the Belgian dunes of De Panne. Just think of the fossil dunes of Cabour (Adinkerke) and the massif of dunes located in the Nature Reserve The Westhoek. Further north, these run even further into the Schipgatduinen. Yes, beautiful nature does not stop at the border of France-Belgium.
"Les Dunes de Flandre" encompass about 700 hectares of dunes and in total about 1,000 hectares of protected nature reserve. You can distinguish the following 4 dune areas:
- the fossil dunes of Ghyvelde
- Dunes du Perroquet (located between the Belgian border and the center of Bray-Dunes)
- Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Dune Marchand (located between Bray-Dunes and Zuidkote)
- Dune Dewulf (located in Leffrinckoucke).

Tip 1: The beaches between Dunkirk and Bray-Dunes can be quite crowded. It causes parking problems in the centers. In the dunes themselves, however, it usually remains miraculously calm. When the tide is high, the pressure on the beaches becomes even greater. Consult the tide forecasts below.
Tip 2: On sunny days, it can get pretty hot there in the wind-free zones between the dune hills. Be prepared: bring plenty of water, sunscreen and protective clothing. Consult the weather forecast below.
