General information about Dronkenput
Dronkenput is an oddity in our collection. In fact, this 500 m³ water tank/reservoir would have remained a noble unknown had it not been for the groundwater pushing this water bunker upwards on one side, causing it to tilt completely. This happened on the night of December 1, 1897. Quite impressive when you consider that this water bunker weighs no less than 213 tons! It was one of the first structures to be built in reinforced concrete.
On the website of the Municipality of Middelkerke, we find the following photo: the Dronkenput had become a tourist attraction. You can also see triangular walls on the roof. Perhaps these were ventilation openings.

The Dronkenput was built at the end of the 19th century as part of a hydraulic project:
– intended to discharge drainage water from, among other places, the Ieperleed into the sea
– via an underground outlet (under the sea dike)
– with backflow protection against seawater.
When you enter this water tank, you actually risk losing your balance: you no longer have any reference point for what is horizontal or vertical, and you are constantly trying to adjust. So you are, as it were... drunk!
