General information about Varan de Voyage
The Varan de Voyage is the little brother of The Dragon of Calais. The official brochure calls them the "Varan Onderweg" in Dutch but that does not seem to us to be a good translation. On the weekend of November 7-8-9, 2025, there were big festivities to welcome this new attraction. A whole regie was developed that led to the spectacle "l'Odyssée". During 3 days (with 9 scenes) there was a battle between this dragon and dragon on the one hand and a mythical female figure Lilith, "la Gardienne des Ténèbres" (freely translated as the guardian of darkness). Two guesses as to who won the battle 😉.
The Varan de Voyage is noticeably smaller than its little brother, the Dragon of Calais. This is because it must also be able to maneuver through the streets of Calais itself. Still, the Varan de Voyage is still a respectable 15 meters long.
The Dragon is a much more cumbersome case operating mainly around the Calais embankment. This one is as much as 10 m high and 25 m long, significantly larger. The Dragon was welcomed back in November 2019. The budget for it at the time was 1.26 M€ and some 400,000 people came to that opening weekend. The figures for the Varan de Voyage 's arrival during this weekend should be available soon.
Did you know that... an exhibition entitled "Dragon, Varan and Chimera" will run until March 1, 2026. There you will learn all about how these machines are designed and executed. The route starts at the Logis du Major, continues along the ramparts and ends at the powder magazine. The main entrance is at the foot of the fort, a stone's throw from the beach and the Dragon Company.
