General information about the Arenberg mine site
The Arenberg mine site is one of the sites recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Coal used to be brought to the surface here (early 20th century). Next to large hangars you can see 3 mine trestles. A mine buck (also called a shaft buck or mine frame ) is a large steel or wooden structure that stands above a mine shaft.

On this site you will also find the Tourist Office "Porte du Hainaut".
Around that mining site you can see several cottages grouped into cités. A cité is a block of houses where people with a common background (the function they performed in the mines) lived in close proximity to each other in a neighborhood. For example, you could have a "cité of electricians."
The site is accessible free to visit (outdoor space) during weekdays. You won 't enter the old galleries or underground mining works, though. However, there are guided visits (with guides/former miners) on the site, organized by local associations or by the tourist office.

Tip 1: Just down the same street from the mine site, just behind the level crossing and the little station, you will see one of the most legendary cobbled lanes to be ridden by the cyclists of the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic. Go check it out. We made a separate info page about la trouée de Wallers-Arenberg.
Tip 2: If you are really interested in life in and around coal mines, then you should definitely check out the Historic Mining Center Lewarde visit. This is the reference when it comes to this subject. They receive about 150,000 visitors there every year. So that can count.
Tip 3: The northern French city Valenciennes is not far away.
