General information about la Roche à 7 heures
The 7 o'clock Rock, called "La Roche à 7 Heures" in French, is a cliff overlooking the French town of Monthermé. There used to be an open quarry there (1842). Around 7h, you could notice the rock well because of the Sun's reflection on that rock face, hence its name. Now you go there to take pictures of the meandering Meuse around the town of Monthermé. According to some, this is the place in France where you can take the best picture of a meander around a town. Check out the examples in the photo section below.
From a lower parking lot / Aire Paysagere de la Platelle(Google Maps - Open Street Map) you can continue hiking through rocky terrain to the even much higher actual viewpoint of the 7 o'clock Rock. In places, however, that hike is very cramped. Not recommended for people with vertigo (vertigo we should really say).
However, you can reach the actual observation point with your car via a normal road. If you really want to take overview pictures with Monthermé completely surrounded by the Meuse, you have to go higher up to that viewpoint. From the lower parking lot you only have a partial view. Of course you can admire the steep rock face of the former quarry. There are also some picnic tables there. You can use this lower parking lot as an original resting point.
But again, to reach the actual viewpoint of la Roche à 7 heures , it is best to go by car to the upper parking lot (located at the Chemin de La Route Saint-Louis, Google Maps - Open Street Map).
Did you know... there is another viewpoint on Monthermé ? Namely that of "La Longue Roche". This is a location even further up. It also has its own parking lot accessible by the same road Chemin de La Route Saint-Louis.
