General information about The Quarry Wellington
The Wellington Quarry is an underground city hewn (mostly by New Zealand miners) in the limestone rocks beneath the town of Arras. It had to accommodate some 24,000 soldiers in order to mount a surprise attack on the German lines. In vain, however. You descend here by elevator 20 meters below the surface and then continue on a plank path. A multilingual guide explains the whole thing. There are also audio guides. Audio-visual presentations are shown at various points in the underground corridor system. At the end of the tour, in a small auditorium, you get to see another film about the Battle of Arras.
Original is that every visitor has to put on a World War I helmet. Is good for safety and it increases the experience value.
There is also a museum store.

Tip 1: Be sure to visit le Place des Héros and the Grand'Place of Arras.. These are the squares best known for their wonderful, typical end gables.
Tip 2: Climb the Belfry of Arras. Definitely pays off.
Tip 3: If you are here during the Christmas period, be sure to visit the immense annual Christmas market of Arras.
